DR. PAMELA TAN
Everyone deserves to feel beautiful. Not only should we see beauty in others, but also in ourselves.
When I was in grade school, I remember feeling both shocked and drawn to a photo of a child with a cleft lip when I was looking for pictures in one of my father’s medical journals. I did not understand what I saw, but I understood that I wanted to help. I made it my lifelong goal to be able to help someone like that boy in the photo.
Three decades later, I am a craniofacial trained board certified plastic surgeon. After graduating from Brown University with honors, Stony Brook University for my medical degree, I completed my general surgery residency at Staten Island University Hospital. It was there where I was able to join my first mission trip to Vietnam with a plastic surgeon and participate in my first cleft lip case. This strengthened my resolve to become a plastic surgeon. I then was accepted to Tulane University to hone my plastic and reconstructive skills. I moved to Washington, DC to receive specialized fellowship training at Children’s National Medical Center which shaped me to become skilled in advanced techniques for both facial reconstructive and facial cosmetic surgeries.
I find volunteering for the underserved to be one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. After mission trips to Peru and Vietnam to perform cleft lip, cleft palate, and ear reconstruction surgeries, I feel even more passionately that everyone deserves to feel beautiful.
